  4. EFFECTIVE WRITING AND GRAMMAR   AND   WORD PROCESSING
  5. IMany times I have to re-read something because it is so poorly written.  E
  6. CI dislike doing this because it wastes my time.  Effective writing D
  7. Bprinciples, a desire to improve one's writing, and practice would G
  8. Ealleviate the problem.  But, it is a chore!  If there was a means to K
  9. Imake it easier, would that help?  If there was a means to make it into a $
  10. game, would that help?  Who knows?
  11. CAnyway, what I have attempted to do is to create some Macros which J
  12. Hshould help anyone who writes, whether it is a letter to a loved one, a C
  13. documentation text file, a high school paper or a college thesis.
  14. EEnglish, even though it is a vibrant and changing language, has some E
  15. Ccurrent rules which make it easier to understand and use.  What my C
  16. AMacros do is to help the writer polish his/her writing.  I won't F
  17. Dgurantee that these Macros will make you another Shakespeare.  They K
  18. Iwon't.  But by using them on those things you write they will eventually 5
  19. become second nature.  You WILL be a better writer.
  20. To become a more effective Writer Read your text THREE times./
  21. First for  -  TECHNICAL ACCURACY and COVERAGE-
  22. Second for -  ARRANGEMENT and FLOW OF IDEASI
  23. Third for  -  READABILITY and MECHANICS (this is where these Macros fit4
  24.               in as well as the spelling checkers)

  40. IOne of the major problems in effective writing is the use of the passive L
  41. Jvoice.  You don't talk using passive verbs, but many people use them when K
  42. Iwriting.  Passive verbs are dull.  Active verbs are vibrant and living.  P
  43. NRewrite those Passive verbs into Active ones.  You don't have to re-write all M
  44. Kyour passive sentences, but by re-writing most of them, your paper will be G
  45. much better.  The main Passive verbs are: IS, WAS, ARE, WERE, and BE.

  61. KVague or non-essential words lower writing quality.  They take up valuable P
  62. Nspace and time.  Tie down your descriptions so that no one can read something O
  63. Minto your work which you didn't mean.  Also, be more positive when writing.  E
  64. You can say positively the same things you normally say negatively.

  91. HERS, and SHE.  Replace them with a neuter pronoun or some other word.

  104. such as Prepositions with periods after them.  (Example  to.  for.)

  109.  will hunt down any commas and periods with spaces on both M
  110. Ksides.  Hunt down colons with spaces on both sides - it should be:  word:  N

  113.  will FIND and CORRECT commas and periods which fall inside O

  255. GAfter running these Macros, try running Sensible Grammar or some other L
  256. Jgrammar checker.  Bet it doesn't find near as many.  Won't be as much fun
