FILE PORTION #1
INTRODUCTION
EFFECTIVE WRITING AND GRAMMAR AND WORD PROCESSING
IMany times I have to re-read something because it is so poorly written. E
CI dislike doing this because it wastes my time. Effective writing D
Bprinciples, a desire to improve one's writing, and practice would G
Ealleviate the problem. But, it is a chore! If there was a means to K
Imake it easier, would that help? If there was a means to make it into a $
game, would that help? Who knows?
CAnyway, what I have attempted to do is to create some Macros which J
Hshould help anyone who writes, whether it is a letter to a loved one, a C
documentation text file, a high school paper or a college thesis.
EEnglish, even though it is a vibrant and changing language, has some E
Ccurrent rules which make it easier to understand and use. What my C
AMacros do is to help the writer polish his/her writing. I won't F
Dgurantee that these Macros will make you another Shakespeare. They K
Iwon't. But by using them on those things you write they will eventually 5
become second nature. You WILL be a better writer.
To become a more effective Writer Read your text THREE times./
First for - TECHNICAL ACCURACY and COVERAGE-
Second for - ARRANGEMENT and FLOW OF IDEASI
Third for - READABILITY and MECHANICS (this is where these Macros fit4
in as well as the spelling checkers)
HAny suggestions or comments would be appreciated. All feed-back helps,
you'know.

GNOTE: This file is divided into five portions. The preceding was the F
Dfirst portion. The next section gives some Word Processing Grammar J
Hsuggestions. The third portion details each Macro. Portion four is an I
Geasy to read listing of the Macros suitable for printing out. Section G
Efive is the Macros themselves, ready to copy into their own file, be J
Hrenamed and compiled onto a copy of Appleworks. Portion FIVE is located K
Ion this disk as another file named C.GRAM.__.MAC depending on what Macro
Program you use.

WORD PROCESSING GRAMMAR SUGGESTIONS
WORD PROCESSING SUGGESTIONS
IOne of the major problems in effective writing is the use of the passive L
Jvoice. You don't talk using passive verbs, but many people use them when K
Iwriting. Passive verbs are dull. Active verbs are vibrant and living. P
NRewrite those Passive verbs into Active ones. You don't have to re-write all M
Kyour passive sentences, but by re-writing most of them, your paper will be G
much better. The main Passive verbs are: IS, WAS, ARE, WERE, and BE.
Example of Passive voice:?
One big problem in writing
the use of the passive voice.
Passive verbs
dull.
Example of Active voice:*
The passive voice
creates
dull papers.!
Passive verbs
exude
dullness.
Macro Set #1
marks five different Passive Verbs in your file (IS, WAS, ARE,
WERE, and BE).
KVague or non-essential words lower writing quality. They take up valuable P
Nspace and time. Tie down your descriptions so that no one can read something O
Minto your work which you didn't mean. Also, be more positive when writing. E
You can say positively the same things you normally say negatively.
Examples:1
I like
red dress
you are wearing.
I like your red dress.
Don't
interrupt me.,
Polite people wait their turn for talking.
I like skiing
a lot
Skiing really excites me.
Use a more descriptive word for the following ones:
SOMETHING?
ANYTHING THAT (usually can be deleted - unnecessary)?
NICE WHICH ( " " " " " )
SWELL/
WONDERFUL NOT, N"T (be more positive)
A LOT
PRETTY
Macro Set #2
marks these words for you to review/change.
Macro Set #3
marks these for you: TO, TOO, TWO and THERE, THEY'RE, THEIR..
Check them to see if you used them properly.
Macro Set #4
locates and marks the sexist pronouns HE, HIM, HIS, HER, H
HERS, and SHE. Replace them with a neuter pronoun or some other word.
These words are often used incorrectly:-
AFFECT - EFFECT CAPITAL - CAPITOL)
COARSE - COURSE BRAKE - BREAK-
DESERT - DESSERT FARTHER - FURTHER&
HEAR - HERE ITS - IT'S)
LEAD - LED PASSED - PAST)
PRINCIPAL - PRINCIPLE QUITE - QUIET3
SHONE - SHOWN STATIONARY - STATIONERY
THAN - THEN
Macro Set #5
marks many of them for you to check. You could then use P
NOpen-Apple F to find and check the others and any other ones you come up with E
such as Prepositions with periods after them. (Example to. for.)
Macro Set #6
will mark
it should be: word, etc.,
Macro Set #7
will hunt down any commas and periods with spaces on both M
Ksides. Hunt down colons with spaces on both sides - it should be: word: N
Lword. Hunt down semicolons with spaces on both sides - it should be: word;
Macro Set #8
will FIND and CORRECT commas and periods which fall inside O
Mquotation marks, these two errors: ". and ", They will be corrected %
automatically to this: ." and ,"
LNOTE: Use Open-Apple F to examine each apostrophe (') to see if it is used
correctly.
NOTE 2: Use
to see that you have closed all of your quotes.'
Find " Be sure each has a partner.
IThe above Macros will help you with your writing, but something else you
should do is:
Read your text THREE times./
First for - TECHNICAL ACCURACY and COVERAGE-
Second for - ARRANGEMENT and FLOW OF IDEAS)
Third for - READABILITY and MECHANICS
NRemember, it is no sign of weakness or defeat that your manuscript ends up in K
Ineed of major surgery. This is common in all writing and among the best
writers.
NFINAL NOTE: My Super MacroWorks Macros are the most extensive and for me the K
Ieasiest to use. AutoWorks should be easy enough to enlarge, but not the
original MacroWorks.

FINALLY:
NRemember, it is no sign of weakness or defeat that your manuscript ends up in L
Jneed of major surgery. This is common in all writing even among the best
writers.
KOnce you have run the macros that you desire, use Appleworks to go through P
Nyour document to find the ~. Change those errors or words that you wish to
and let the rest fly.
KIt may prove easier to use one MACRO SET at a time, check and research the "
feed-back, then use another set.
FYou could also run all MACRO SETS, make a Print-out (double or triple &
spacing), then review the Hard Copy.
GAfter running these Macros, try running Sensible Grammar or some other L
Jgrammar checker. Bet it doesn't find near as many. Won't be as much fun
either.
LNOTE: YOU COULD MAKE A COPY OF APPLEWORKS TO PUT THESE MACROS ONTO SINCE I N
LUSE ALMOST ALL OF THE SOLID-APPLE KEYS. YOU WILL STILL HAVE THE OPEN-APPLE 1
KEYS TO WORK WITH WHEN REVIEWING YOUR DOCUMENT.
LYou could change these Macros from Open-Apple Replace to Open-Apple Find if A
you would rather. Keep the original copy of the Macros though.
